A group led by John Antonucci - an Ohio beverage distributor, and Michael I. Monus - the head of the Phar-Mor drugstore chain, along with companies, such as Erie Lake, Hensel Phelps Construction, KOA Radio, and the Rocky Mountain News, was selected by an advisory committee formed in 1990 by then-Governor of Colorado Roy Romer, to be the ownership group.

The National League, on July 5, 1991, approved Denver as one of the two expansion teams. They were approved to start playing from the 1993 season.

Their first game in their franchise history – an away game - was on April 5, 1993, which they lost 3-0 to the New York Mets at the Shea Stadium. They, however, won their first game – a home game - four days later at the Mile High Stadium (earlier known as the Bears Stadium).

Their first year in MLB was a struggle, as was to be expected. However, in September, they recorded their first winning month with a 17-9 record, and finished the season with 67 wins – a record for a National League expansion franchise. A home attendance of 4,483,350 for the season is a Major League record that still stands. The Colorado Rockies, however, are the second MLB team to record an annual home attendance in excess of 4,000,000, the first being the Toronto Blue Jays in 1991.

The Home Grounds

The Colorado Rockies started playing their home games at the Mile High Stadium, and called it their home for the 1993 and the 1994 seasons. It is here that the Rockies recorded the highest annual attendance, which is still a Major League record.

In 1995, the Rockies moved base to the Coors Field, in Denver, and are still based there. Coors Field was originally planned to seat 43,800 fans only, but, after the success of the Rockies’ first season at the Mile High Stadium, the plans were changed to add more seats. Today, the Coors Field has a seating capacity of 50,200.

The Titles

The Colorado Rockies do not have any Western Division titles, any National League Pennants, nor any World Series titles under their belt. They have made only a single playoff appearance, in 1995.

The Rockies have no one inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and neither have they retired any jersey number, except # 42 belonging to Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers, whose jersey has been retired throughout the Major League Baseball.
